Short answer

Use a card for small planned expenses, keep reported balances comfortable, pay the total amount due on time and avoid repeated applications. A secured card can establish history when you cannot qualify for an unsecured card. Improvement takes consistent reported behaviour, not a one-month trick.

01

Set up the system once

Enable full-statement autopay, keep a payment buffer in the linked account and add a due-date reminder as backup. Review statements for errors and unfamiliar transactions.

02

Keep utilisation comfortable

CIBIL identifies credit utilisation as one factor in credit behaviour. Avoid maxing out the card and consider making an early payment before the statement if a necessary large purchase temporarily uses much of the limit.

03

Apply slowly

Each lender application may create a hard inquiry. Compare first, apply for a realistic product, and wait for the decision instead of sending many applications in a short period.

Questions people actually ask

Before you decide

How quickly will my CIBIL score improve?

There is no guaranteed timetable. Credit institutions report periodically, and the score reflects a broader history rather than one payment.

Should I carry a balance to build credit?

No. Carrying a balance can create interest cost and is not required to establish responsible repayment behaviour.

Can a secured card build a credit profile?

CIBIL describes an FD-backed secured card as one route for new-to-credit users. Confirm that the issuer reports the account to credit bureaus.
