Three numbers decide the card
Estimate eligible annual travel spend, the conservative value of the rewards you will actually redeem, and the total annual cost. Ignore aspirational business-class redemptions that do not match your travel habits.
Direct booking can matter
Travel cards often distinguish direct airline and hotel bookings from online travel agencies. Axis Atlas, for example, gives its accelerated travel rate only to defined eligible channels and merchant codes.
Lounge access is not the core return
A lounge visit has value only when you would otherwise pay for it or genuinely use the benefit. Spend thresholds, guest rules and participating lounges can change, so treat access as a secondary benefit.
Questions people actually ask
Before you decide
Are miles always worth more than cashback?
No. Miles can be valuable with the right partner and availability, but they are less flexible and their realised value varies.
Should an occasional traveller pay a premium annual fee?
Usually only when the welcome, renewal and ongoing benefits you will certainly use exceed the fee after tax.
Should I book through an OTA or directly?
Follow the card’s current terms. Some cards reserve accelerated rewards for direct airline and hotel bookings.
