Do you actually need term insurance?

Checked 4 October 20262 min read

Short answer

You need term insurance if another person would be financially worse off after your death. That can mean lost salary, a home loan, a child’s education, care for parents, or the cost of replacing unpaid work at home. If nobody depends on your income or work and no debt would fall on someone else, term cover may not be necessary yet.

Dependants matter more than marital status

Being single does not answer the question. A single person supporting parents or repaying a joint loan can need cover. A married person with an independently wealthy partner and no shared obligations may need less. Write down who would lose money, housing, care or future contributions if you died this year. A homemaker can also create a financial gap. Childcare, household management and elder care cost money to replace. The cover decision should value that work rather than treating “no salary” as “no economic contribution.” Availability and underwriting will depend on the insurer.

Debt is only one part of the need

Clearing a home loan can protect housing, but a family still needs monthly spending after the loan is gone. Conversely, not every loan needs full cover: a loan attached to an asset that would be sold may create a smaller gap. Calculate what the family plans to keep. Do not buy term insurance as a return product. Pure term cover is meant to pay on death during the term. If you survive, the premium bought protection. Return of premium adds a survival refund at a higher price; it does not make an inadequate cover adequate.

Employer life cover is a bonus, not the foundation

Group life cover can change when the employer renews the scheme and usually ends with employment. Count it for the period it is active, but size personal cover without assuming the same job and benefit will exist for decades. Tell the nominee the policy exists, where the document is stored and how to contact the insurer. An unknown policy does not protect a family well.

Questions people ask next

Do I need term insurance if I have no children?

You may still need it for a partner, parents, shared debt or future obligations already being planned. If nobody would face a financial gap, you can revisit the decision when that changes.

Should both spouses have term insurance?

Cover each spouse whose death creates a financial gap. That includes salary and the cost of replacing unpaid care. The amounts do not have to match.

Do retirees need term insurance?

Often less or none once dependants are self-sufficient, large debts are cleared and assets can fund the survivor. A retiree still supporting someone or carrying a material joint liability may need cover for that remaining period.
