Is your employer’s health cover enough?
Employer health insurance is valuable, especially when it covers existing illnesses quickly or includes parents. It is not a complete long-term plan because you do not own the contract. The employer can change the sum insured, co-pay, parent cover or insurer at renewal, and the cover can end when your employment ends.
What the company plan is good at
Group cover can be the first policy used for a hospital bill. It may include conditions that a new retail policy would place under a waiting period. It can also be cheaper for adding parents than a fresh senior-citizen policy. Ask HR for the certificate of insurance or benefit schedule, not a slide from induction. Check who is enrolled, the exact last date of cover after resignation, room eligibility, co-pay, disease limits, cashless hospitals and whether maternity or parents are included.
Why personal cover should start before a job change
A personally owned policy gives you continuity that is not tied to payroll. If you wait until you resign, a fresh policy can start its waiting periods at the same time the group cover disappears. Buying personal cover earlier lets those clocks run while the employer policy still protects you. Do not assume time under a company plan will move automatically. Migration or portability from group to individual cover must follow the insurer’s process and underwriting. Ask before the employment end date, and keep the old cover active until the new schedule is issued.
How the two policies can work together
Use the employer policy as the first layer if its claim process is easier and its limits are clear. Keep the personal policy for continuity and larger or later bills. If one policy cannot pay the full admissible claim, current health-insurance rules let you choose a primary insurer, which should coordinate eligible balance settlement with the other insurer subject to both policies. Keep both cards, policy schedules and claim contacts available to your family. A second policy nobody knows about is not a plan.

Questions people ask next
Should I stop my personal policy after joining a company with good cover?
Usually no. You would give up continuity that belongs to you and become dependent on the next employer’s benefits. If affordability is the problem, compare a sustainable personal base plus a super top-up before cancelling.
Does employer cover continue during notice period?
The employer’s certificate and HR policy decide the exact end date. Do not infer it from your last working day or from a colleague’s experience. Get the date in writing before scheduling treatment or switching cover.
Can I claim the same bill from both policies?
You cannot recover more than the admissible expense under indemnity policies. One policy can pay first and the other may pay an eligible balance, subject to its own terms. Fixed-benefit covers work differently.
