Should this money go in as a SIP or a lump sum?
A SIP is the right shape for money that arrives as salary. A lump sum is money already sitting in the account. They are not two forecasts about the market. If you need the cash inside three years, neither one belongs in an equity fund. If the horizon is long and the emergency reserve is already funded, the question is whether you will invest the cash you have, not whether you can time the next fall.
What the regret is really about
People ask “SIP or lump sum?” when they are afraid the market falls the week after they pay. A SIP does not remove that fall. It spreads the purchase dates of new money. A lump sum takes the price on the day you pay. Over a long holding period, the choice matters less than staying invested and less than the expense ratio of the plan you picked. Spreading a lump sum over a few months is a way to make the decision bearable. It is not a method that is known to win. Do not pause a SIP because an index is at a high. The SIP is the salary plan. Pausing it to wait for a cheaper month is the lump-sum bet in disguise. Stop new equity SIPs when the money is now needed soon, or when you are funding an emergency by investing money you cannot lock. That is a change of job for the cash, not a view on the index.
A simple split that matches the cash
Keep a reserve you can spend without selling funds. That reserve is not the lump sum we are talking about. For cash you already have, and will not need for seven years or more, you can invest it on a day you choose, or in a few equal parts over the next few months if a single debit would keep you up. Write the date you will finish. An open-ended wait for a correction has no finish. For next month’s salary, automate one SIP into the fund that passed the three questions on how to judge a fund. One Nifty 50 index fund in the direct plan is enough equity for most people at that horizon. A second fund has to own something the index does not.
Who should not invest either way this month
Do not start if the money is rent, a premium, or a tax payment. Do not start an equity SIP to “use” a bonus you need for a down payment inside three years. A debt holding or a deposit matches that date better, and the deposit sum is in what a fixed deposit keeps after tax. Do not start in a regular plan because the app hid the direct one. The fee is the first leak.

Questions people ask next
Is a daily or weekly SIP smarter than a monthly one?
It changes how many prices you trade at. It does not change the fund. A monthly SIP on salary day is enough. More dates are extra instructions to reverse when you want to stop.
What if the market falls 20 percent after I invest a lump sum?
Then the value is lower and the horizon you wrote down is the reason you can wait. If you could not watch that fall, the amount was too large or the horizon was too short. Selling after the fall to “restart as a SIP” is how people lock the loss in.
Should parents get the same split?
Only if the date they need the money is as far away as yours. A parent who may spend the money in a few years should not be in the same equity SIP. Start from the withdrawal date, which is the same rule as the rest of the fund page.
