Short answer

Get a credit card only if you can repay every statement in full, track due dates and use it for planned spending. Wait if you need the card to fund routine expenses, already struggle with bills, or expect to pay only the minimum amount due.

01

Four green flags

You have stable cash flow, an emergency buffer, a working budget and the discipline to pay the full statement amount automatically. Rewards are a bonus after these conditions are met.

02

Four reasons to wait

Pause if income is uncertain, essential expenses already consume nearly everything, you are repaying costly debt, or a missed due date would destabilise the month. Building a score is not worth creating expensive debt.

03

If you decide yes

Choose a low-fee product, set conservative card controls, enable full-statement autopay and make one small planned transaction first. Read the statement rather than relying only on app notifications.

Questions people actually ask

Before you decide

Will a credit card automatically improve my CIBIL score?

No. Responsible reported use can help build a credit profile, while late payments, high utilisation and frequent applications can work against it.

Is paying the minimum amount due enough?

It may prevent the account from being treated exactly like a completely unpaid bill, but the remaining balance can attract substantial interest. Pay the total amount due whenever possible.

Should I get a card only for offers?

Only if the card remains manageable and its ongoing value exceeds its costs without changing your normal spending.
