Should I upgrade my credit card?

Use this checklist before accepting a premium credit-card upgrade, including fee, reward changes, eligibility and lost benefits.

Short answer

Upgrade when the new card produces more usable annual value than its extra fee and preserves the benefits you rely on. Decline when the upgrade is mainly status, the spend requirement changes your behaviour, or your existing card will be closed before you understand the consequences.

01

Compare the full year

Calculate rewards on your real categories, subtract annual fee plus tax and include only benefits you would otherwise buy. Compare that net figure with the current card—not with zero.

02

Ask what happens to the old account

Confirm whether the card number, network, statement date, reward balance, account age and standing instructions change. Get important answers in writing where possible.

03

Premium traps

Milestone benefits can encourage overspending, lounge access can have qualification rules, and transfer points can be hard to use. A metal card has no financial yield.

Questions people actually ask

Before you decide

Does accepting an upgrade improve my credit score?

An upgrade is not a guaranteed score-improvement strategy. Ask the issuer whether it involves a new application or account treatment.

Should I upgrade from a lifetime-free card to a paid card?

Only when conservative, usable annual benefits exceed the total fee and the new card clearly fits your spending.

Can I ask for the upgrade to be lifetime free?

You can ask, but the issuer decides eligibility and offer terms. Preserve written confirmation of any fee waiver.
