How do you transfer and then close a demat account?
Close a demat account only after the shares, mutual funds held in demat, and open instructions have moved. Closing first strands the holdings or triggers a mess of residual charges. The fee you are trying to escape is usually the annual maintenance charge. A “free” account from a discount broker is a waiver of that charge, not a waiver of brokerage, statutory levies, or the cost of a trade you still place.
Move the holdings, then ask for closure
Ask the new broker for the closure-cum-transfer process, or place an off-market transfer through CDSL or NSDL, using the process your depository shows you this month. You will need the target client ID and the reason code the form asks for. Check that every ISIN has landed, including any odd-lot holding and any mutual fund that was credited in demat form. A SIP that still buys into the old demat will recreate a balance after you thought you were done. Stop those SIPs and point new ones at the new account, or at a folio outside demat if that is how you mean to hold the fund. Only then submit the closure form to the old broker. Ask for a closure letter. Watch the next two monthly statements. A leftover unit will keep the account alive and can keep the annual charge alive. For what TPIN and DDPI change on the way out, read how a sale is authorised.
What “free” and BSDA actually cover
Basic services demat account, BSDA, is a demat category for small holdings. The annual charge is lower, or nil, while the value of what you hold stays inside the limit SEBI has set. That limit has been revised before. Check the current cap on the regulator’s page before you assume the account qualifies. If a rally or a new purchase pushes you over the cap, the broker can treat the account as a normal one and the annual charge returns. Add up brokerage you pay, the annual charge after any waiver expires, the charge for a demat or remat, and the penalty if a minimum balance in the linked account fails. Do not open a fourth demat because an app waived the first year. Transfer the one you use.
Who should not close it this week
Do not close an account that still has a pledged holding, an open sell instruction, or an IPO refund that has not landed. Do not close it the week you need to sell. A transfer can miss a sale window. Do not sign a form you have not matched to the client IDs on screen. A wrong target ID is a transfer you will spend weeks reversing.

Questions people ask next
Can I transfer only some shares and keep the account?
Yes. Closing is optional. If the annual charge is already zero and you might need the account, transfer what you want to consolidate and leave the shell, provided the broker will not bill an empty account. Get that in writing.
Mutual funds in demat or in a statement of account?
Demat mode sits with the broker and moves when the demat moves. Statement-of-account mode sits with the fund house and does not need this closure. Know which one you bought. A SIP “in the app” can be either.
Will my average purchase price move correctly?
Do not count on the new broker to reconstruct every old contract note. Download the old tradebook and the capital-gains statement before the old login dies. Tax lots are your record if the new screen shows a blank cost.
