What counts as a lifetime-free credit card?
A credit card is lifetime-free only when the most important terms say the annual fee is nil for as long as the card stays open. A fee that the bank skips because you spent ₹1 lakh this year is a one-year waiver. Those are different products, and the sales line often uses the same words for both.
The line that matters
Ask for the sentence in the terms, not the sentence in the phone call. It should say the renewal fee is nil, or that the joining fee and annual fee are both nil, without a spend condition. “Lifetime free on approval” in a message is not that sentence. People on r/CreditCardsIndia have posted cases where an HDFC card sold as lifetime-free later carried an annual fee. Treat that thread as a warning about sales talk, not as a finding about every HDFC card. If the terms say the fee is ₹499 plus GST unless you spend ₹1 lakh in the card year, the card is not lifetime-free. Miss the spend and the fee posts. GST makes it ₹499 plus 18 percent, not ₹499.
Who a nil-fee card fits
It fits a first card, or a card that will see ordinary monthly spend and nothing else. You are not paying rent to the bank for lounge visits you will not take or for a reward rate you will not clear. The useful test is dull: can you pay the full statement every month, and does the card report to the bureau. Rewards are secondary. Skip it if your normal spend already covers a fee on a card whose reward, after the cap and the excluded categories, is larger than that fee. A nil fee on a card that earns nothing on the shops you use is not a bargain. If the spend is petrol, start with when a fuel card is worth it. If the bank later cuts the reward, use what to redo after a devaluation.
If the fee appears anyway
Do this in order, the same week the fee posts. Open the terms you were given at approval and the latest fee schedule in the app. Screenshot the page that mentions the fee, with the date visible. Raise it in the issuer app or the official email, and quote the lifetime-free line. Ask for the fee and the GST on it to be reversed, and ask them to state in writing whether the card is nil-fee going forward. If they confirm the card was never lifetime-free, you are holding a waiver card or a paid card. Then the decision is whether the reward on your real spend covers the fee. Close it only after you have moved any EMI and any auto-debit, and after you know you still have one card that reports. Closing your only old card can shorten the history that shows on the bureau.
What we will not publish here
A list titled “10 lifetime-free cards this month” goes stale the week a bank changes the variant. This page will name a card as lifetime-free only after we have read the current terms and written the date we read them. Until that note is on the card’s own page, assume nothing from a comparison site, including this one.

Questions people ask next
Does lifetime-free mean the card stays free after an upgrade?
No. An upgrade is often a different product with its own fee. Read the upgrade terms as a new card. If you refuse the upgrade, say so in the app before the new card is issued.
Is a spend-based waiver good enough?
It is fine if the spend is money you already spend. It is a bad deal if you buy things in March to dodge a ₹499 fee. The fee was the cheaper option.
Will a lifetime-free card build a credit history?
Only if the issuer reports the card to the bureau and you pay on time. A free card that is not reported does not do the job people take it for. Confirm reporting in the terms or by checking your own credit report after two statements.
