When is a fuel card worth it?
A fuel card earns its place when you spend enough at the pump that the surcharge waiver, after its cap, is larger than the reward a general cashback card gives you on the same rupees. Threads from people who do this sum often land near ₹15,000 to ₹20,000 of fuel a month before an oil-company card is worth the annual fee and the extra plastic. That range is a starting point from how those questions get asked. It is not this month’s waiver. The waiver rate, the litres or rupees it covers, and the annual fee are in the card’s current terms.
What you are actually buying
Fuel cards tied to a pump brand, such as BPCL SBI Card OCTANE or HPCL Super Saver Credit Card, are the names that keep coming up when someone wants the surcharge back at one company’s stations. They are leads to a contract, not a ranking. Some waive a slice of the fuel surcharge up to a monthly limit and pay a smaller reward, or none, on groceries and bills. A 5 percent online cashback card can still win a household that fills a tank twice a month and spends the rest of the card on shopping. Write down last month’s fuel rupees, the stations you can actually reach, and the annual fee including GST. Apply the waiver only up to the cap in the terms. Spend above the cap is just fuel again, often at a weak earn rate. Then compare that rupee result with the cashback card you already carry, using the same fuel amount and that card’s exclusion for fuel. Many cashback cards pay nothing at the pump. That exclusion is why a fuel card exists, and it is also why the fuel card is a second card, not a replacement, if the rest of your spend is online.
Who should skip it
Skip it if you do not pass the pump the brand uses. A waiver you cannot redeem in your commute is a fee. Skip it if your fuel spend sits well under that rough monthly band and your other card’s fee is already justified by groceries or online spend. Skip it if the card’s “fuel savings” count reward points you will not redeem. Points that expire, or that convert poorly, are not the surcharge back in your account. If a 2026 notice cut the earn rate or the cap, rerun this sum on the new terms. The habit of calculating it once at the branch is how people keep a fuel card after the waiver has shrunk. The wider pattern is in what to redo after a card devalues.

Questions people ask next
Is the surcharge waiver the same as cashback?
No. The waiver stops a charge the pump adds. Cashback is a reward on the spend. Some cards advertise both and cap them separately. Read the two lines. A waiver with a tight monthly cap stops helping after you cross it.
Can I use a fuel card for everything else?
You can swipe it. Whether anything else earns is a different table. If the card is dull outside fuel, use it at the pump and keep the everyday card for the rest. One wallet does not require one card.
Do rent and wallet loads count toward the fee waiver?
Usually they are excluded, the way they are excluded on cashback cards. A fee-waiver that needs “annual spend” often ignores fuel itself, rent, and wallet loads. Check that definition before you try to manufacture the waiver.
