Is a RuPay credit card on UPI worth it?

Checked 27 September 20263 min read

Short answer

A RuPay credit card linked to UPI lets some merchants pull the payment from your credit limit when you scan a QR code. It is useful only on the shops that actually accept credit-on-UPI, and only up to the reward cap in that card’s terms. Through 2026, card holders were still reporting shops that refuse the RuPay credit option and rewards that look like 1 percent until the cap or the excluded category bites.

What you are choosing

You are not choosing “UPI” in general. PhonePe, Google Pay and the other apps can already pay from your bank account, which is the choice in which UPI app to keep. The new choice is whether the same scan should use the credit card. That shows as a credit option at checkout, and only on a RuPay credit card the app has linked. If the shop’s QR only accepts a bank account, the card never enters the payment. You have then learned the shop’s setup, not the card’s reward rate.

The three lines in the terms

Read these before you apply, on the issuer’s current page. The reward on UPI transactions: the percentage, whether it is cash or points, and the rupee cap per month. “Unlimited 1 percent” in a forum post is a claim about one card on one day. The cap is what your statement will follow. The merchant types that earn nothing. Rent, wallet loads, fuel, insurance premiums and government payments are the usual exclusions on other cards, and UPI rewards often copy that list. A card that earns on a kirana QR and not on the rent you pay by UPI is a kirana card. The fee. A nil fee with a tight cap can beat a paid card whose higher rate you never reach. Run one month of your real UPI spend, subtract what you pay by bank account today, and see if the reward clears the annual fee plus GST.

Who should get one

Get one if a large share of your monthly spend is already QR payments at merchants, and your main card earns nothing on those scans. One RuPay credit card is enough. A second one overlaps the same cap problem. Skip it if your spend is rent, wallets and bills. Those are exactly the categories reward rules tend to throw out, and a failed “credit” option at the counter just means you pay from the bank anyway. Skip it if you revolve a balance. Interest on a credit card will erase a year of 1 percent scans in a couple of months.

If the shop says no

Pay from the bank account and leave. Do not split the bill, open a second app, and stand there. Refusal is common enough that card holders were writing about it in August 2026. The card is still fine for shops that do accept it. It is a poor card if the places you actually buy from do not.

Questions people ask next

Does a UPI credit payment count toward the card’s ordinary reward rate?

Often it has its own rate and its own cap, separate from swipe or online spend. Check the two lines separately. The headline “5 percent online” usually does not apply to a QR scan.

Will this show on my credit report?

The card does, like any other credit card, if the issuer reports it. Each UPI purchase is a card transaction. Pay the statement in full.

Can every UPI app use the card?

You link the RuPay credit card inside an app that supports credit-on-UPI. If the option never appears, the gap is the app or the merchant, not your PIN. Try the issuer’s stated app list before you assume the card is broken.
