Which UPI app should you keep?

Checked 27 September 20263 min read

Short answer

Keep one UPI app you will still be able to open when a payment fails and the money has already left. Add a second app for cashback only while that cashback is paying on the kind of transfer you make. A scan that spends from a credit limit is a different product, covered in RuPay credit cards on UPI. In March and April 2026 people were still trading names: PhonePe, Google Pay, Paytm, super.money, POP — and the cashback half of that list changes faster than the failure half.

Two jobs, two standards

The first job is sending money to a person or a merchant and getting it back when the collect fails. For that, the app you want is the one whose history shows pending, success and failure clearly, and whose in-app help reaches the bank complaint without a random phone number from a comment section. The second job is a rupee back on a payment you were going to make anyway. super.money and POP come up when people ask for cashback. Treat those mentions as a lead, then open the app and read this week’s cap. A cashback app that nags, hides the failure screen, or pays only on a merchant you never use has failed the second job and is a risk to the first.

What to do when the money leaves and the payment says failed

Stop. Do not send the same amount again until you know where the first debit sits. Open the app’s transaction detail and note the UPI reference, the time, the amount and the other party’s UPI ID. Screenshot it. Check the bank account. A debit and a later reversal can be the same payment, not two. If the debit is still there after the time the app shows for automatic reversal, raise the complaint in the app. NPCI’s MyUPI service (upihelp.npci.org.in) is the official place to check status and complain. Use that site, not a number someone replied with under a Reddit post. Fraud threads are full of unofficial numbers. If you sent it to the wrong UPI ID, the complaint is different from a failed payment. You need the receiver’s bank to cooperate. Start the app complaint the same day and keep the reference.

A simple setup

Put the reliable app on the home screen. Put the cashback app in a folder. Once a month, look at whether the cashback still exceeds the time you spend tapping through it. If the reward has gone, delete the second app. You can install it again next season. The bank account and the one solid app are the system.

Questions people ask next

Is Google Pay or PhonePe safer than a new cashback app?

Safety here is practical: who handles a failed debit, and how fast you can see it. The large apps are not magic. They are easier to complain through because more banks already know their flow. A new app can be fine for a ₹200 merchant payment. It is a bad home for your rent.

Should I keep four UPI apps for the offers?

No. Each extra app is another PIN, another permission list, and another history to check when a debit looks wrong. Two is the upper limit: one you trust when it breaks, one you can delete when the cashback stops.

Do UPI rewards and a RuPay credit card stack?

Sometimes the app pays a scratch-card reward and the RuPay card pays its own UPI reward on the same scan. Read both caps. Stacking two small rewards does not fix a merchant who refuses credit-on-UPI. That decision sits on the RuPay card page.
