What actually moves when you port a health policy?
Porting is a shift to a new health insurer at renewal so that the waiting period you have already completed can be credited on the new policy. It is not a clone of your old benefits, and it is not automatic. Apply while the current policy is still in force. A policy that has already lapsed is a fresh proposal.
What can carry, and what is priced again
The credit people want is the time already served on a pre-existing disease and on the general waiting period. If you have finished three years of a four-year wait, the new insurer is supposed to recognise that completed time, within the portability rules in force and the underwriting on your file. Confirm the credited months in the new proposal before you pay. The new policy still has its own sum insured, room-rent cap, co-pay, sub-limits, and list of non-payables. Time credit does not mean the new insurer must offer the old room category at the old premium. They can accept you, accept you at a higher premium, or decline. A decline means you stay with the current insurer for that renewal. Do not cancel the old policy until the new one is issued.
How to file it without a gap
Start with the insurer you are leaving, early enough that the renewal date is not next week. You will need the previous policy copies, a claim history if you claimed, and a proposal that declares the same illnesses you declared before. A portability form that “forgets” a claim is the same mistake as a blank illness on a new purchase. The disclosure checklist is the same one as what to tell an insurer before you buy. Ask the new insurer, in the document, how many months of waiting period they will credit and for which condition. If that sentence is missing, you do not yet have a port. You have a quote.
Who should not port this year
Stay if you are in the middle of treatment the current policy is paying, unless the new insurer has accepted that condition in writing. Stay if the only gain is a slightly lower premium and the new room-rent cap is stricter than the hospital you use. Stay if the old policy will lapse before the new schedule arrives. A week without a policy is a week in which a new illness starts a new waiting period.

Questions people ask next
Does porting reset no-claim bonus?
Treat the no-claim bonus as a feature of the old contract until the new schedule shows a sum insured that includes it. Ask for that figure. Do not assume the bonus moves because the waiting period does.
Can I port a parent’s policy onto my insurer?
You can request it as their policy, in their name, at their renewal. Porting is not the same as adding them mid-term onto your floater. Mid-term addition is a different underwriting event. For a parent with an illness, read whether they need their own policy before you collapse two contracts into one.
I already bought a new policy. Can I port into it later?
Portability is tied to renewal of the policy you are leaving, using the process the regulator and the two insurers specify. A second policy you bought quietly beside the first one is usually just a second policy, with its own waiting period. Check both contracts before you stop paying the older one.
