Which app should you use to pay a credit card bill?
Pay the bill from the card issuer’s own app or netbanking when the due date is inside two days. A third-party app is worth it only in the month its reward is still paying, and only if you can see the payment land before the due date.
What actually changes the choice
The cashback on bill-payment apps moves. In March, May and September 2026, people on r/CreditCardsIndia were still asking which app paid that month, and the names in the answers were CRED, MobiKwik, Amazon Pay and the bank’s own bills screen. Those threads are a record of the question, not a rate card. Do not treat a comment about ₹5 or ₹50 back as this month’s offer. Three facts decide the app, in this order. The payment has to reach the card account before the due date, including weekends and the cut-off the issuer publishes. A reward that arrives tomorrow is worthless if the issuer has already billed a late fee today. You need one place to prove you paid. The issuer app, the SMS, and the receipt in the third-party app should agree on amount and date. If they do not, call the issuer with those three, not with a forum screenshot. The reward has to be money you can use. Coins that expire, cashback that needs another purchase, and a waiver that excludes the bill you just paid are not ₹50.
When the issuer app is the right one
Use the issuer app by default. HDFC’s bills section, SBI Card, iMobile and the other bank apps post to their own system. No second company sits in the middle, telling you the payment is “processing” while the card account still shows the full amount due. You will need this app if something fails. A late fee, a wrong card number or a double debit is the issuer’s problem. Adding CRED or MobiKwik adds a second complaint desk. A scan that spends from a RuPay credit card is a different payment, not a bill settlement.
When a third-party app is worth opening
Open it only after you have already set the payment on the issuer app, and only if all of these are true. The in-app offer states a rupee amount, a cap and an expiry. A banner that says “up to 100% cashback” is advertising, not the offer you will get on a ₹40,000 bill. You have paid this way before and the credit showed on the card within the time the app claims. First-time use two days before the due date is a bad test. The card you are paying is on the app’s supported list. Some apps pay some issuers and not others, and the list changes. If the offer fails any of those, close the app and pay the issuer.
A same-evening check
Write down four lines before you leave the screen: card last four digits, amount, the reference number, and the time. Next morning, open the issuer app. The amount due should have fallen by what you paid. If it has not, do not pay again until you have the reference number in front of you. A second payment is how people end up in credit on one card and short in the bank account.

Questions people ask next
Is CRED still the best app for credit card bills?
Not as a standing rule. People still compare it, and the comparison is what it pays this month. The 2023 version of CRED is not evidence. If the issuer app is slower by an hour and the third-party reward is a coupon you will not use, stay in the issuer app.
Will paying through another app hurt my credit score?
The score cares that the issuer received at least the minimum due, on time. It does not care which app forwarded the money. A payment that is still pending on the due date can be marked late. That is the risk.
Can I pay a credit card bill with another credit card?
Issuers generally refuse a credit card as the source of a card-bill payment. Apps that seem to allow it are often charging the other card as a wallet load or a merchant payment, which can be a cash-advance or an excluded category. Read the source of funds on the confirmation screen before you confirm.
What if money left my account and the card still shows the full bill?
Keep the bank debit SMS and the app reference. Check the issuer app the next morning before you pay a second time. If the amount is still outstanding after the app’s stated posting time, raise it with the issuer and the app on the same day, with those two records.
