Does Apple Pay work in India?
Yes, Apple Pay works in India, but only for Axis Bank Visa and Mastercard credit cards as checked on 5 October 2026. Axis debit cards do not qualify. Neither do RuPay cards, cards from other banks or a bank account linked through UPI. If you do not have an eligible Axis credit card, there is nothing useful to set up yet.
For an eligible cardholder, Apple Pay is a different way to present the same credit card. It can replace the physical tap at a contactless terminal and can appear as a checkout option in supported apps and websites. It does not create a new account, improve the card's reward rate or replace UPI.
Who can use Apple Pay in India today
The supported combination is narrow: an eligible Axis Bank credit card on the Visa or Mastercard network, added to Apple Wallet on a compatible Apple device. Apple's current India bank list names only Axis Bank and only those two credit-card networks, and Axis still has to approve the specific card when you add it. The words **Axis Bank** are not enough. An Axis debit card is excluded because the India launch is credit-card only. An Axis RuPay credit card is excluded because the supported networks are Visa and Mastercard. A Visa or Mastercard from HDFC Bank, ICICI Bank, SBI Card or another issuer is excluded because Axis is the only participating Indian issuer at this check. Support can expand, so treat this as a dated answer. The bank-and-card list below is the part to recheck before trying again with an unsupported card.
How Apple Pay works
You add the eligible card to Apple Wallet, either from the Axis Bank Mobile Banking App or by tapping the plus button in Wallet. Axis may ask for an OTP or in-app verification before it approves the card. Apple Pay does not hand the merchant the number printed on your card. The card is tokenised: a device-specific account number is stored in the device's Secure Element, and the payment uses that credential instead of exposing the actual card number. At checkout, Face ID, Touch ID or the device passcode confirms that it is you. For an in-store payment, the iPhone or Apple Watch sends the payment credential to the point-of-sale terminal over NFC, the same short-range technology used by a contactless card. Double-click, authenticate and hold the device near the contactless reader. For an app or website, choose the Apple Pay button and authenticate on the device.
Where Apple Pay works and where it fails
In stores, Apple Pay needs a contactless point-of-sale terminal. Look for the contactless symbol, and make sure Tap and Pay is enabled in the Axis app's card controls. A shop that accepts the physical card only by inserting or swiping it is not an Apple Pay checkout. In apps and online, the merchant must show Apple Pay as a payment option. Merely accepting Visa or Mastercard online does not guarantee an Apple Pay button. Axis also says Online Shopping must be enabled in the card's usage controls. There are two different failures to separate. If Wallet refuses the card during setup, the usual decision-changing cause is eligibility: wrong bank, debit instead of credit, or RuPay instead of Visa or Mastercard. If an eligible card will not add, check that it is active and visible in the latest Axis app, then finish the OTP or in-app verification. Axis tells customers who see “Card Not Added”, “Contact Your Issuer” or “Invalid Card Data” to contact the bank. If the card adds but a payment fails, check the terminal for contactless support, the card's Tap and Pay or Online Shopping control, and its transaction limit. A tick marked “Done” on the iPhone is not enough if the merchant says the payment failed; confirm the debit in the Axis app, SMS or email before paying again.
Apple Pay versus tapping the same card
Apple Pay and the physical tap use the same Axis credit-card account, limit and standard reward rules. On a ₹1,000 purchase, changing from the plastic card to Apple Pay does not make the purchase worth more rewards. Axis describes Apple Pay as another way to present the card. The practical difference is at checkout. Apple Pay authenticates on the device and keeps the actual card number away from the merchant. The physical card is simpler when your phone battery is unavailable, Wallet setup has failed or the terminal does not cooperate. If tapping the card already takes two seconds, Apple Pay is a convenience and privacy choice, not a financial upgrade.
Apple Pay versus UPI
UPI moves money through a linked bank account or, for supported merchant payments, a linked RuPay credit card. Apple Pay in India currently presents an eligible Axis Visa or Mastercard credit card to a card terminal or an Apple Pay checkout. They are different payment rails and solve different jobs. Apple Pay cannot currently link your UPI ID or bank account, and it cannot turn a merchant's UPI QR code into an Apple Pay payment. Keep your UPI app for person-to-person transfers, bank-account payments and QR codes. Use Apple Pay where you would otherwise tap the eligible credit card or enter it at a supported online checkout.
Fees and rewards
Axis Bank says there is no setup fee, transaction fee or annual Apple Pay charge for its customers. That does not make the underlying credit card free: its annual fee, interest, late charges and other card terms still apply. Rewards, cashback and card benefits follow the underlying Axis card's standard rules. Apple Pay does not add a second reward layer. If the card excludes a merchant category or transaction from rewards, putting the same purchase through Apple Pay does not repair the exclusion.
The failure case
The weak case is someone applying for an Axis credit card mainly to get Apple Pay. The wallet does not change the card's fee, reward rate or acceptance economics. If the card itself is poor for your spending, a nicer tap does not rescue it. Even an eligible cardholder should keep a fallback. A non-contactless terminal, a disabled card control, an unfinished verification or a merchant without an Apple Pay button can stop the payment. The physical card or UPI still does the real work when the wallet cannot.
Who should skip it
Skip Apple Pay for now if you do not already have an eligible Axis Visa or Mastercard credit card. Repeatedly trying an Axis debit card, RuPay card or another bank's card will not change the support list. Also skip the setup if most of your daily payments are UPI QR scans and bank transfers. Apple Pay does not replace those. For an eligible Axis cardholder who already taps the card often, it is worth adding; for everyone else, wait for the official bank or network list to expand.

Questions people ask next
Which banks and cards support Apple Pay in India?
As checked on 5 October 2026, Apple lists only Axis Bank Visa and Mastercard credit cards. Debit cards, RuPay cards and cards issued by other Indian banks are not on the supported list, and Axis still has to approve the specific card during setup.
Why will my Axis debit card not add to Apple Wallet?
The India launch supports Axis Visa and Mastercard credit cards, not Axis debit cards. The problem is eligibility, not the way you entered the card. Wait for Apple and Axis to add debit-card support rather than retrying the same card.
Does Apple Pay support UPI or RuPay in India?
No, not at this check. You cannot link a UPI bank account or UPI ID to Apple Pay, and Axis RuPay cards are not eligible. Use a UPI app for bank-account and QR payments, including a separately supported RuPay credit card on UPI.
Does Apple Pay charge a fee in India?
Axis Bank says Apple Pay has no setup fee, transaction fee or annual charge for its customers. The underlying credit card can still have its own annual fee, interest and other charges.
Why is my card not adding to Apple Wallet?
First confirm that it is an active Axis Bank Visa or Mastercard credit card. Then update the Axis Mobile Banking App, check that the card appears there and complete the OTP or in-app verification. If Wallet shows “Card Not Added”, “Contact Your Issuer” or “Invalid Card Data”, Axis asks you to contact its customer care.
